Ageing, disability and spirituality
A lot of the discussion about how we deal with ageing and disability tends to focus on the promises offered by science such as stem cell research into dealing with diseases and degenerative conditions.
But a national conference held 10 days ago in Canberra sought to place spiritual and theological issues firmly on that agenda.
In fact, a news release issued from the third National Conference on Ageing, Disability and Spirituality said ageing people in Australia are suffering because their care too often neglects the spiritual dimension of their lives.
The release says that people in older age can continue to live very positive lives, even with disabilities and dementia, and that spirituality and meaning were vital but often overlooked parts of the holistic care that needs to support such people.
How does spirituality sit within the matrix of issues and needs facing older people, particularly as they move from independence to dependence, through disability or dementia. How can these spiritual issues be understood and addressed? Are there theological and ethical challenges that emerge when we take seriously the spirituality inherent in people living with disability, frailty and dementia?
